Mardi Gras, meaning Fat Tuesday, has long been a festive day to mark the end of the pre-Lent season. When they came to what would become Louisiana in 1699, Frenchmen Iberville and Bienville made merry and named their destination after the famous festival.
It wasn't until much later, at the 1872 Rex parade, that the Mardi Gras season came to be associated with the colors gold, purple, and green. Why these vibrant colors? Gold signified the precious metal and regality, purple was another symbol of royalty because, for many years, it wasn't an accessible dye color for the masses, and green stood for hope and wealth. Mardi Gras is a day of plenty.
Mardi Gras Motifs
In addition to its famous colors, Mardi Gras has a few distinct motifs. To begin with, there's the Fleur de Lis, the lily-shaped symbol of French royalty and Christianity. Of course, it wouldn't be Carnival if there weren't a few crowns, masquerade masks, and beads dotted about, along with jesters' hats and shoes. You might also want to accessorize with images of alligators, trumpets, maracas, top hats, and king cake for the full New Orleans experience.
